Officials recently decided to implement new measures at Puerto Vallarta International Airport ahead of the peak travel period during the high season.
The new protocols are aimed at guaranteeing passenger comfort and safety during a time of record arrival figures.
The busy winter season is the most hectic time of the year for Puerto Vallarta’s travel industry. As temperatures across North America drop, millions of travelers flock south in search of idyllic beaches and lively culture.
And with Puerto Vallarta fitting the bill, the Mexican Pacific destination is expected to shatter its all-time travel record this winter.
With that in mind, here’s a look at what’s being done in Puerto Vallarta in preparation for December travel chaos.
Puerto Vallarta Airport To Receive Operational Backup During Holiday Travel Period
Christmas and New Year are just several weeks away, which means that hundreds and thousands of travelers will soon pour into Puerto Vallarta from around the world. Although cruise ship travel has grown wildly in popularity, air travel remains the most popular way to reach Puerto Vallarta.
That’s why aviation officials in the sun-soaked destination have announced a host of new measures for the winter season to help cope with record travel numbers. From deploying more law enforcement to ensuring enough staff at customs checkpoints, Puerto Vallarta authorities want to ensure a pleasant and safe experience for passengers.

The man in charge of the operation is Christian José Amador Lizardi, the general director of Puerto Vallarta International Airport. According to the director, the new winter season protocols are being carefully coordinated with state and federal authorities as part of a wider cooperation framework.
With some 17,000 passengers traveling through the airport each day, officials are redoubling efforts to accommodate record international interest in Puerto Vallarta. As a result, officials are making sure there is enough staff to meet the needs of travelers in the sunny destination.

Such astonishing travel numbers mean Puerto Vallarta International Airport is officially among the busiest in Mexico. A gateway to not only Puerto Vallarta but also the sun-soaked coast of the Riviera Nayarit, Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz Airport is just a stone’s throw away from some of the most beautiful resort destinations in the Mexican Pacific.
And with Puerto Vallarta skyrocketing in popularity, officials are continuing to work on the airport’s ambitious expansion plan. “We are making progress, working day and night, which is visible from the main avenue, and we are fully committed to this new project,” the airport’s director said in a statement.

The brand-new terminal won’t be ready until early 2025, so travelers will still have to wait. The airport currently has one terminal, with Concourse B handling international airline operations as well as nearly all flights coming in from the United States and Canada.
This winter is expected to be the busiest on record for Puerto Vallarta, with passenger numbers expected to rise by over 10% compared to last year. During the busy holiday period, officials will be enhancing security efforts across the sunny destination.
