Last Updated

Puerto Vallarta has long been known for its picture-perfect beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

But recently, this Mexican destination has been making headlines for another reason – its skyrocketing popularity among travelers.

From adventure seekers to beachgoers, Puerto Vallarta has something for everyone. However, this surge in popularity comes with its set of challenges, particularly for the local resorts as they experience a shortage of staff

With travel at an all-time high, Puerto Vallarta has become a hotspot for vacationers.

The city’s vibrant culture, natural beauty, and endless opportunities for fun have made it a must-visit destination.

But this surge in visitors, while fantastic for the local economy, has placed some resorts in a bit of a tight spot.

Travel is Back!

As 2023 rolled around, Puerto Vallarta found itself in the middle of a new wave of tourism.

After experiencing travel restrictions, the world was eager to explore again, and many chose Puerto Vallarta.

The destinations’ lush vibes, charming cobblestone streets, delicious food, and, of course, those mesmerizing beaches beckoned travelers.

Cruise ships returned to the Bay of Banderas, bringing thousands of passengers eager to explore Puerto Vallarta.

Airlines scheduled more flights, and travel agencies scrambled to meet the demand for Puerto Vallarta packages.

Hotels and resorts braced for a busy year, but what they did not anticipate was just how busy things would get.

Staffing Shortages

Puerto Vallarta’s resorts have long been known for their exceptional service. From the moment you step into the lobby, you are greeted with warm smiles and impeccable attention to detail.

“High season” in Puerto Vallarta usually peaks during the winter months, but lately, it seems like every season is a high season.

Resorts have been stretched thin, with many employees working longer hours and taking on additional roles to compensate for the shortage.

Housekeeping, front desk, and restaurant staff have become a rare and precious commodity.

The root of this staffing challenge lies in the unexpected surge in demand.

Rise in Popularity

In a recent interview, Claudia Pérez, Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism, shared how one of the primary challenges facing the tourism industry is the shortage of staff to meet the demand.

As the city’s popularity grew, many resorts found themselves understaffed and struggling to meet the expectations of their guests.

It is a challenging situation for both the resorts and their dedicated employees, who are doing their best to ensure guests have a memorable stay.

Tourism in Puerto Vallarta contributes approximately 8% to the state’s GDP, “We are the third-largest contributor to the country’s tourism totals,” said Claudia Perez.

Puerto Vallarta recognizes how impactful tourism is for the local economy, and because of this, they are working hard to ensure travelers’ experience is not affected by the shortage of staff.

A Blessing in Disguise?

While the staffing shortage is a challenge, it also highlights Puerto Vallarta’s tremendous appeal.

Travelers are rediscovering this beautiful destination and sharing their experiences. Puerto Vallarta is trending, and that is not a trend that is likely to fade anytime soon.

In response to the challenges, local officials have suggested some creative solutions.

From offering housing assistance and increasing opportunities for career advancement to looking for ways to incentivize the next generation of hospitality professionals.

These possible solutions would not only help the current shortage but contribute to the long-term sustainability of Puerto Vallarta’s tourism industry.

Tips for a Seamless Stay

So, what does this mean for travelers planning a visit to Puerto Vallarta?

First, a bit of patience and understanding can go a long way. Resorts are doing their utmost to ensure guests have a fantastic experience, even with fewer staff.

Here are a few tips to make your stay as smooth as possible:

  • Plan Ahead: Make reservations for restaurants, spa treatments, and activities well in advance to secure your preferred times.
  • Be Flexible: Understand that some services might take a little longer than usual.
  • Support the Local Community: Venture outside the resort to enjoy local restaurants and businesses. It is a great way to experience Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant culture.
  • Express Gratitude: A “thank you!” can make a huge difference. Recognize the hard work of the staff who are working to make your stay memorable.
  • Enjoy the Moment: Remember, you are in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Relax, soak in the sun, and have fun!

Puerto Vallarta’s surge in popularity emphasizes all that this destination has to offer. While resorts work through staffing challenges, the city remains a beloved destination for travelers.

With a little understanding, a sprinkle of patience, and a lot of appreciation for the hardworking staff, your Puerto Vallarta getaway is sure to be a memorable one.
