Puerto Vallarta welcomes millions of travelers each year who enjoy the city’s splendid weather and dynamic culture.

This winter, the coastal hotspot is trending as the most popular destination in Mexico when measured by average hotel occupancy levels, which tracks how many rooms are sold out during a given period.

According to the latest statistics published by national tourism officials, nearly 80% of all hotel and resort rooms were sold out in Puerto Vallarta during the second half of November.

The astonishing figure places the Mexican Pacific city as the most sought-after destination in Mexico as the busy high season begins.

In December, that pattern is expected to intensify even further as travelers flock to the coastal destination for their winter holidays. As a result, hotel occupancy will continue to climb, reaching an estimated 90% over the Holidays in places like downtown Puerto Vallarta and much of the Riviera Nayarit.

According to Vanessa Pérez Lamas, Jalisco’s secretary for tourism, Puerto Vallarta is currently one of the most attractive destinations in Mexico for international travelers.

The city, which has enjoyed extreme popularity for decades already, is making strides in improving safety and cleanliness, among other measures, making Puerto Vallarta a hit with travelers.

The coastal hotspot has also been awarded a number of accolades this year, including being one of the friendliest cities for travel as well as the best culinary hotspot in Mexico according to the Travvy Awards.

Although air travel continues to be the preferred way to reach Puerto Vallarta and nearby regions, cruise ship travel is making a huge comeback in the sunny destination.

The latest overview shows that the number of cruise ships stopping in Puerto Vallarta’s ports has grown by over 50% compared to last year, with more than 450,000 cruise ship passengers setting foot in the city this year alone.

That number shows that Puerto Vallarta continues to dominate the travel industry in the Mexican Pacific, where it holds a unique reputation as a cultural and culinary hotspot.

Meanwhile, hotels and resorts in Puerto Vallarta are undergoing huge renovations to bolster their luxury appeal amid soaring travel numbers. Just recently, the 234-room Hotel Buenaventura Grand wrapped up a costly renovation, adding new experiences for guests to enjoy.

Much like many of its resorts, officials in the sunny destination have launched new initiatives to clean up and restore aging infrastructure in downtown Puerto Vallarta.

With so many travelers flocking to the city for its centuries-long history and unique architecture, experts want to ensure the city remains in tip-top shape to continue welcoming more travelers.

Just north of Puerto Vallarta, the stunning 200-mile-long Riviera Nayarit is also anticipating a hectic winter season.

The popular luxury travel hotspot is home to hundreds of smaller properties, many of which are trending as some of the best for high-end travel in Mexico.
